The Hermit

An absolute gem from Suparna! you can write to her sue195chat@yahoo.com and tell her to write more! :)

Enjoy…

Up in the hills of Nilgiri
2 miles up the winding lane
Lived a mysterious hermit
With a long flowing mane

No one could guess his age for sure
Indeed, no one even knew his name
So they conjured up tall tales around him
Some called him genius, some insane

An aroma of fresh herbs and spices
Emanated from his kitchen window
A heady concoction of saffron and cinnamon
Soaked up the valley below

Some were left with watering mouths
Some went weak with hunger
Some, caught up in a sudden frenzy
Would start to lick their fingers

From biriyani and polau to shahi paneer
And desserts with cream and fudge
His repertoire was unparalled
From Indian, to Chinese and Dutch

But no one dared go up the hill
His reputation was quite scary
It seems anyone who went up to him
Faced consequences rather dreary

Though what truly happened up in the hut
Was really all up in the air
Some said, the hermit asked questions
That were absurdly rare

If one came up with the right answer
The meal was up for grabs
But if you goofed up even once, it meant
Yoga—for the brains and the abs

Sonu made a promise to his mother
Never to go up that hill
Yet he found his resolve weakening, when
The smells tantalised his nostril

He dreamt of jalebis all night long
And corn seeds that went popping
And pizzas the size of football fields
With strawberry jam as topping

Early next morning he made up his mind
To meet up with this hermit
He would sneak out in the early hours
To avoid taking a permit

He stayed up all night and read up his books
And mugged up the names in history
He then rolled up his sleeves and pulled up his socks
And set out to unravel the mystery

“Why you’re not scary at all,” said Sonu
As the yogi came out of his meditation
He smiled at the little boy and said
“Wait till you hear my question.”

After several hours of silence
(In truth it was only 5 minutes)
The hermit opened his mouth and asked
“What’s my name? Do you know it?”

Sonu who had prepared all that he could
Couldn’t believe his misfortune
He pictured himself living up in the hills
Doing impossible yogic contortions

His eyes got misty, his throat was choked up
He prayed to Shiv and to Allah
He mustered up all the strength he could find
And let out a cry “BAAHAAA AAAAA”

“Yes, yes, my boy!” screamed the hermit
As he jumped up from his seat
“Bawa is my name, BAWA BAWA!” he yelled
And did a little jig

“For years they came up for my food
And gobbled them up with gusto
But not one person asked me my name
Between the slurps, the burps and the Bravos”

Sonu was hailed a hero in the village
The hermit was no longer threatening
If you don’t believe this tale my friends
Then look up “Sounds Interesting”

    O beautiful Suparna….
It is funny, interesting and very rythemic. There are very few pieces where one doesn’t get disenterested at any point. Yours is one of them. Wish u all the best. If u’re not a professional poet already, you could start taking it seriously.
