Nutrella Nuggets with Pineapples

For all you people wanting an Indian recipe … here it is! No cheese, no cream, no olive oil either :)

It’s very tasty, and bcoz of the pineapple in it has an utterly unique flavour :)

1 packet of nutrella (soya) nuggets boiled for 15-20 minutes with salt. Drain away the water and squeeze dry (careful dont burn your hands)

1 juicy, sweet pineapple cut into medium sized chunks

2 medium carrots peeled and cut into small chunks (or strips)

1 big handful of green peas… Dunk them in boiling hot water for about 3-4 minutes (you can use more if you like green peas)

a big bunch of fresh corriander chopped up finely

10-12 curry leaves

Dhania Jeera powder and Garam Masala Powder

Salt to taste

In a heavy bottomed pan, heat 5-7 generous spoons of ghee (the nuggets absorb a lot of ghee). Add curry leaves and let them crackle a bit. Add 4 tablespoons of dhania jeera powder and 3 tablespoons of garam masala powder and cook well on low heat for some time, until you can smell the delicious fragrance of the cooked masala. Add salt.

Add the pine apple and cook for about 5-8 minutes. Then add the carrots and cook for another 3-5 minutes. Next add the nuggets and stir them thoroughly into the masala, seeing to it that the masala coats them properly. Cook the entire mixture on high heat for about 6-10 minutes stirring all the time. Add the green peas and then reduce heat to simmer and cook for another 10ish minutes. Remember to keep stirring so that it doesnt stick to the bottom of the pan and burn.

Stir in half the coriander and after transferring to a serving bowl, garnish with the rest of the coriander.

Serve piping hot with rotis or toasted whole wheat bread. A nice (Masoor) dal will go really well with it.

Jai Gurudeva!

love

  15. This is what Green Peas Biryani can teach us. Since you love cooking here it goes.

    STEAMING HOT PEAS BIRIYANI

Mouth-watering! Delicious! Mother usually made Peas Biryani on Wednesday afternoons in winter. It was her favourite dish to prepare, for it was easy to make, yet a hot favourite amongst the kids. Moreover fresh peas were in season and tasted heavenly!

She heated some oil in a pan and added a spoonful of cumin seeds. Then she added a handful of chopped onions. She proceeded to add some green peas and seasoned them with salt and turmeric powder. Having sautéed them for a couple of minutes she turned in the cleaned and washed rice and poured in a good amount of water. She covered the pan with a lid and let it cook on a slow flame.

Strangely, the ingredients in the simmering pot started a conversation.
The rice was the first to say, ‘I am the most important of all of us present here
for I am pure white and wholesome. I am the key ingredient to making Peas Biryani. I am SATYA, this is the Truth.’

The yellow turmeric powder chuckled and said, ‘No longer are you white my dear, for I have dyed you in my own colour. I am DHARMA. This is my duty.’

The peas smiled peacefully and said, ‘What is Peas Biryani, without peas, eh?
We are the most attractive and delicious part of this preparation. We are Shanti. We are PEACE. We are peas (peace) and our colour too is green that is the colour of peace!’

The salt mused to itself and said, ‘Who would ever be able to eat Peas Biryani,
without salt? I am the most important of all. If I were not there Peas Biryani would be unpalatable. My taste shall be infused in each particle. I am PREMA. I love each one of you equally.’

The onions said, ‘We add the tang to this dish. We add flavour. We are the soul
of all vegetarian food. We are AHIMSA. We tolerate all other flavours, yet retain
    our own!’

The pan spoke up and said, ‘It’s I who is holding all of you in here. But for me, you would all have been separate identities. I have held you together, so that jointly, you can become a delicious dish. Where would you be without me?
I am DISCIPLINE and I am indispensable. ‘

The cumin seeds were dancing up and down in the boiling water and said,’
Try making Biryani, without us! It shall be quite tasteless. We sizzle in the hot
oil first of all for we are devoted to spreading our flavour, wherever we go.
    We are DEVOTION.’

The Biryani was almost ready and the oil glistened on every grain ofrice. It
said, ‘I ensure that each grain of rice, each pea and each cumin seed, retains
its individual identity. I prevent stickiness. I am DISCRIMINATION! ‘

The water was almost completely absorbed by now. It smiled contentedly
and said, ‘I was determined to permeate into each particle of all of you.
Without me could peas Biryani ever have been made? I am DETERMINATION
and I am the most important of all !’

Mother came by and checked to see, if the Biryani was done. The gas flame
smiled quietly to itself and said, ‘Each one is so full of its own importance.
Without the power of heat provided by me, what would they be? It is the power
of God vested in me that I can give the energy to cook.

Alas, who remembers the POWER OF GOD?’ God smiled to Himself as the lady turned off the gas and waited, till He was needed again.

    REFLECTION

Each one of us in this world is so full of his or her importance. We conveniently forget God who gives us the power to do everything.

Whether acknowledged or not, whether remembered or not, God is the power behind doing and making everything, even that Peas Biryani!

I cooked it in my house yesterday evening! I ran out of ingredients(masala powder and dhania poweder)! But it came out really nice!! For the first time i liked my experimental(not exactly) cooking! when i tried one of your recipes long time back (i think it was a cake) i put wrong ingredients – instead of baking powder i had put salt or the reverse dont remember! t came out bad really bad! We had to throw out the whole stuff! So i gave up the idea of bawa’s recipes! hehehe!:P But yest it was diff!

I really never liked soya much! But yesterday i loved it!! [shouldn't have put too much though]

If its one of your experiments(i am sure its) pineapple, soya, peas and carrot! i would say the best and weirdest combination!

Thanks for inspiring me to cook! :) [believe me my mom was really happy because i started to cook she has been trying to make me cook for years!]

I must say Bau I really relished it at the Shimla Yes!++… I had thought of asking you the recipe, but by the time I was out of silence you were long gone… anyways now that i have the recipe I’ll simply make myself get relished by it :D
haaaan one thing more… Shimla mein pineapples nahin mile the kya???? :P :D
    JGDeva!!! :D

  21. Anir says:

Hey Bau, just finished cooking it, and eating it too.

The pineapple totally made it rock, but it was waaay too spicy for me. I guess the part on “1 Packet of nuggets” was not very clear. I put in 100 gms, and was too spicy.

But, it was a heck of a lot of fun making it anyway. I’ll be treating the Chennai YES+ gang this evening with it. Hope some of the more tolerant taste buds like it. Cheers! and thanks!
