In the meeting area of the Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo, is a shop that has fish tanks on 3 sides forming its front… and it said “Fish Spa” … Now i was pretty sure this is not where fish go for a massage
… But on further inquiry we got to know that the tanks are full of doctor fish… and they give a very gentle pedicure!
Thats a highly magnified photo of a doctor fish (Garra Rufa), actually they are quite small, maybe 2 cms was the biggest in the tank… And they were the beauticians in the Fish Spa!
So, of course we wanted our pedicure!
So we wash our feet, roll up our pyjamas/pants whatever, and then dip our legs into the tanks and these small fish swarm all over our feet… and rub their heads against the skin, they have no teeth… They have rough edges to their mouths and so very effectively and gently scrape of dead skin from our feet, much the same as any pedicurist would do in a beauty salon… and then they eat this dead skin up! Its a feast for them, and an ultimate tickle, rub, scrub luxury for us!
I absolutely loved every moment of it… In the beginning there were many, many of them going all over my feet… i had scratched my foot a day earlier and they were especially interested in the tiny wound (I learned later that they can disinfect injued skin as well!)… It was a glorious feeling… at least 50 of them all over going scratch, rub, tickle, all together…
Now i keep my feet quite clean and so they didnt get too much of a feast from me after a bit, but they loved dinesh’s feet (he oftentimes allows the skin on his feet to flake and can become a pedicurist’s nightmare, but i am sure the fish loved every little morsel of him that they were getting!) and he was squealing with mirth almost throughout…
All too soon our 5 minutes were up… my wound had completely healed, actually disappeared and my feet felt silky smooth to touch… and i am pretty sure we heard some tiny burps from the tanks… the fish had feasted well!
Imagine, getting silky smooth feet, by becoming fish food!
… What a wonderful universe we live in…
It was late in the night by this time, almost 1:00 am or so and so we did what any tourist in Singapore would do at this time… Go to Mustafa!!
All about Mustafa and the Sentosa Island a little later…
