3 Idiots

In a line: Superb movie, perhaps one of the best movies i have ever seen. Do yourself a favour and go see it!

The Indian College of Engineering has a student, who actually loves machines, applies the knowledge he has learned in class to real life situations, doesn’t believe in learning by rote, wants to genuinely help other students in need, is an all round nice guy and is in love with the director’s daughter… Naturally he is an idiot! He simply doesn’t do what he is expected to do. He wants to understand stuff, he wants excellence in his field not success (as in great grades). He knows fully well, that when one has Knowledge, success has no choice but to follow…

The 3 Idiots

The other 2 idiots are his buddies in arms, who support him, drink with him, follow him… and basically think he is superman… AND manage to scrape through their exams, one because he lives on fear and guilt, the other because he loves animals more than engines, and is doing the degree to please his father who he has no guts to stand up against…

All the college gags that are on the internet, all those silly jokes and short videos are put in the movie with great effect. The acting is flawless from every single person in the movie, the attention to detail is immense and it shows. All the songs are hummable and melodic and none of them are superfluous, which is saying a lot for a hindi movie :)

All out YES!+ Knowledge points have been touched upon, Aamir khan’s character reminded me strongly about myself and dinesh  put together when we were in IIT… though i was never top of my class, and the director’s daughter was already married :)

As far as the noise that Chetan Bhagat is making, he has written a truly remarkable book five point someone based on which this movie was made. But it is really only based on the book, just a few scenes are lifted from there and anyone who has read the book will say the movie is really different from the book. The book is definitely brilliant in its own right… and so is the movie. And Chetan should stop making the noise and really start to enjoy the movie :)

3 grouses:

1. There are some profs (very few of them) in real life who are wonderful human beings and brilliant teachers… not every single ones are villains and dumbos as was portrayed in the movie. One or two profs in a better light would have made a huge difference to bring to light the reality that’s there in the educational institutions of India and possibly the world.

2. Similarly there are parents who truly want their children to be happy, not simply fulfill their dreams, so they can get some sort of vicarious pleasure or have some loans repaid. There are parents out there who dont emotionally blackmail their kids… all the parents in the movie are shown to be fairly shoddy… and i do agree that most parents will act the way these people are acting in those situations… but there are some precious few who wouldn’t and those could have become a great role model for parents, just as Aamir’s character is for the young people watching the movie.

3. They should have credited YES!+ and Art of Living somewhere in the movie.

Having said that, i would tell everyone to go watch the movie… and then tell them, if you liked the movie, you will LOVE the YES!+ course! :)

Jai Gurudeva!

love

bawa

ps grouse 4: Idiot was a favourite gaali of mine, after this movie, the word idiot is going to be regarded as high praise :)

pps there is much more to the movie, i have deliberately not written it, coz i dont want to give away all the nice twists and turns in the story…

  4. Mihir Joshi says:

Simply a machau movie !! as i walked out of the movie hall one thing i was relating it to the yes!+ course !! and the Aal izz wel in our AOL world means aal izz well aal izz well = Jai gurudev jai gurudev. So nice it is to say to our friends who have not yet taken up the course ” Is every thing well once you say aal izz wel ??? ” and we can give them back yes for us it is !!!! :) )

  5. rudhira says:

  6. komal says:

oh yeah 3 idiots also reminded me of my college days in bangalore.. and such a superb movie with such a deep meaning that parents have 2 change their attitudes towards education and so the students… but first the whole system esp. in india needs an overhaul the emphasis of indian education seems to be on only marks rather than practical learning and application.. i went thru the o levels -a levels system in high school so it was cool but i saw so mnay of my icse and cbse friends suffering if they didnt produce a 90% thru rote learning.. even the college education sucks here big time no wonder so many indian students wanna go abroad 2 study because its easier..

  7. Paramanada says:

“They should have credited YES!+ and Art of Living somewhere in the movie.”

Maybe you should sue them for copyright infringement of the most secret knowledge which now is available in a bollywood movie.

  8. Anupam says:

Bau, the best dialogue of the movie was…Study become CAPABLE..not SUCCESSFUL (Its in hindi int he movie of course…:P)…

I really felt like i was sitting through managing relationships and studies sessions from our Yes!+ in the movie…and the fact that its so hilarious of course reminds me of those sessions with you..hehe..

All in all truly one of the finest movies after Taare Zameen Par and Rang De Basanti…

Loved the review Bau…seen it twice already…:)

  9. Pooja says:

    Hey Bau,

I really remembered you during the movie and I felt this superb movie is full on inspired by YES+ . It something we already learnt in the course:)

    JGD Bawa,

    1. Yes, I have same opinion, that I have not seen any movie, which is better than this one. “3 idiot” movie is the best.

    2. It is not only about mechanical engineers. The story applies to us, software professionals as well. However, to make such movie ,on software people, and keep it “non-technical” to target general public, is difficult.

    3. The movie also talks about applied mechanics. The hero applied mechanical engineering fundas to solve practical problems. http://groups.google.com/group/aolit We have Google Group to apply IT knowledge for serving the society. It is formed as per Guruji’s wish. I wish more IT professional join this group and brainstorm practical ideas.

But I don’t think Dinesh bhaiyya was also the same ..
I guess he must have been stylish , cool and a simple n calm guy…
    Am I right?
And do watch “Kung fu panda” if you have not seen yet..
Its an oscar winning animated movie.. You will really love it…

  26. Abhilasha says:

    Love you!!

  29. Virat says:

    Yup! A great movie indeed!

Reminded me of my engineering days! I always felt the need for a movie on engg life! growing up we saw all these regular bollywood movies, and their depiction of “college life”, and I thought that had nothing to do with my college life!!

Also, this movie will inspire more young people to take the road less travelled! I am going to make sure parents of all YES!+ volunteers watch this move! :) Also my dad – He is still upset about the fact that his engineer son is now a “professor”!! :)

The pic is damn cool Bau!

    Love
    Virat

I agree with you Bau…. 3 idiots is one of the best movies even I have seen in my life… Its just beautiful !!!
Bau, after watching such movies one feels the only “work” people must do is make movies or act in them… when will we at Art of Living make such movies…

    Lots of Love

  36. Hi Bau
Nice review..hilarious pic…insightful grouses and I loved the PS.
Now I’ll be waiting to be called as an ‘Idiot’ by you :)

I’ve seen the movie and read the book n i absolutely agree wid u. Both had total different intentions n somebody like Chetan Bhagat shouldnt have given a damn to it (the credit stuff)..he keeps coming in the limelight some or the other way..his blog..his ToI articles..his books…his lectures ! Why does he want this?

  37. Oma Ram says:

Nice review. Really Bau the idiots are like the warriors of art of living. Jgd love om

  38. Ajay Sethi says:

    Jai Gurudev Bau

    Thanks for this post.
I watched this movie and infact ‘many’ of us from YES!+ Hyderabad gang watched it together. Upon asking Tapan bhaiya we found that he has already watched it twice in Baroda before coming to Hyderabad…:)

Watching 3 Idiots was simply amazing experience. In fact immediately after movie we were echoing the same thing…”these guys have picked up so many points from YES!+”…:)

PS: Nice photo of you, Dinesh bhaiya and JD bhaiya. But I guess it would have even better in case you would have sat on the green (middle) seat, would have matched your dress as matching with JD bhaiya’s sweater…:)

    Jai Gurudev

  39. Meghana says:

hahahahahahhohjohohohohohohhehehehehehhihihihihihihih! Bau! Another amazing post, especially the pic of u, Dinesh dada n JD bhaiya was enough to make me laugh for 10-15 minutes. Now since u hav certified the movie, I will definitely watch it.

You three are really idiots who have wasted their engineering degree and now following a cult. You are also spoilig our youth by recruiting them to your cult.they also become useless like you by foregoing all real life skills by getting addicted to your techiniques and being brainwashed that Sir Sri is a an infallible God.

  44. mrinal says:

    jaigurudev bhaiya..
i loved 3 idiots too..its a wonderful movie no doubt abt it..
bt i apologise to disagree on chetan issue..being a creative person (in some sort..!!) i cn understand dat it hurts when smone is nt given due credit..before d film ws released it ws all in media dat 3 idiots is based on FPS n none of dem said k its original work..there are certainly many changes in movie bt dere r significant similarities as well.. a creative persn strive fr appreciation n due credit..n dats all chetan asked fr..i mean hw many times v ve heard story hs been stolen frm sm writer bt no justice is given to d original writer..smwhere v need to take a stand..n c wat is ethical..

    rest toh love u loads..
cia on dsn in goa.. :)

  57. Vijay says:

Totally agree – Simply brilliant. Just watched it a couple of nights ago and watched it again yesterday. When I watched the movie, some of the messaging was all so reminiscent of our YES+ course and I could totally relate to a Bau QnA :-)

Btw, that was a nice pic wid u, Dada n JD.

Jai guru dev n Lots of Lau, BnD

  58. shilpy says:

    …exactly!!

a teacher (virus) in college (1 of d most reputed in Ind) howled at me coz i had asked her a Q whose A she didn’t know.. “Aal izz well” i remarked.. :D :D

  63. Neelam says:

Wonderful Movie. The songs are superb especially the ‘all is well’ song. We should sing this in satsang

  64. neha says:

heyy bawa u said tat the movie is in a way similar to urs n dinesh bhaiya’s life in IIT-Bombay….i agree especially 4dinesh bhaiya….though it ws not the Director’s daughter though lol;p

  65. Gaurav says:

hey bau…1 doubt..why was Sherman Joshi still afraid even after wearing stones/rings?they have their own energy/impact in our lives…right?who knows those stones were helping him in preventing from being even more afraid? examples galore…Amitabh Bachan…i know he is hardworking(thats the prime requisite) but i think his stones would have helped him even more, gave him more motivation unknowingly perhaps…??!!should one have stones?if they have impact then why not?arent we at a loss?and what if we get wrong stone/s?same questions in case of vaastu?where to draw line?(ya we do our regular kriya, apart from that)hehe..JGD…

    • Bawa says:

you are more powerful than any stone … you do your Seva Sadhana and Satsang, you become even more powerful
then all these stones and stuff loose their significance

  66. [...] already. All the rave reviews are right, the movie is a lot of fun. The coolest review is probably Bawa’s review, and he even has a cool pic to go along with it — check it [...]

  67. awesome movie!! I couldn’t stop laughing while watching the movie.. Indians really have some good stuffs going on with them, they are also artistic.. Slumdog Millionnaire was also a bomb.. Love 3 idiots too..
